Mel Gibson to Make Movie About Ancient Jewish Warrior

Mel Gibson to Make Movie About Ancient Jewish Warrior

Mel Gibson is turning a quintessentially Jewish story into a movie. The controversy-plagued actor-producer-director is developing an untitled epic historical drama about ancient Jewish warrior, Judah Maccabee, EW reports.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker hasn't had much luck on the big screen lately, starring in box-office disappointments Edge of Darkness and The Beaver while continuing to battle a public-relations nightmare stemming from his personal relationship drama and the outcry over anti-Semitic remarks.

But Gibson is apparently hoping to pay homage to the Chosen People with this new film project, which is a collaboration with screenwriter Joe Eszterhas (Showgirls, Basic Instinct), who is penning the script. Despite his racier hard-R screen offerings, Hungarian-born Eszterhas also wrote the emotional Holocaust-themed court drama Music Box. After Eszterhas is done with the script, Gibson, who will produce the film, has first dibs at directing it as well.

The Maccabees, led by Judah, were a rebel Jewish army that revolted against their Seleucid Empire rulers in the 2nd Century, BCE. The Maccabees' guerrilla-style victory, which led to the restoration of Jewish worship in Jerusalem's Holy Temple, is what is commemorated during the holiday of Hanukkah.

Gibson's last religious film, The Passion of the Christ, made nearly $371 million at the box office, making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever made.
